It’s hard to keep up with the world of work.

There’s an overwhelming amount of information out there on study, careers, how to get a job, how to change jobs, how to stand out in an interview, how to improve emotional intelligence, grow your leadership skills, learn to communicate effectively, what the future world of work will look like, how to adapt/evolve/refine your employability skills … the list goes on and on and on.

But if you are looking to take the next step in your early career pathway planning, explore remote work roles and opportunities in an increasingly globalised workforce or improve your employability skills, which careers sources can you trust and which information will be right for you?

The birth of the podcast industry as an on-demand media, entertainment and information source has seen a proliferation of niche world of work podcasts that can be a great way to get a ‘quick fix’ of careers information and advice from experts.

Career and Interview Coach Leah Lambart, Director of leading career coaching business Relaunch Me, says there are a few things to think about when choosing the right careers podcast:

It is relevant to your age group?

It is relevant to your location?
(Often podcasts are UK or US-based so you need to take into consideration cultural differences in the approach to career development and job search).

Does it includes practical tips and advice that can be actioned straightaway?

In considering career pathway planning or changes, or looking for tips on applying for a job or interviews, Leah also says a good podcast will contain:

  1. Interviews with people who have successfully completed career changers that will provide you with reassurance that others have been in your position, and not just survived but thrived!

  2. Advice and inspiration to take the action required to facilitate positive change in your life and career

  3. References to local career resources and websites so you can follow up with your own research

  4. Practical tips on how you can improve your job search approach, job search collateral and utilise your personal and professional networks

Leah hosts her own podcast, Relaunch Your Career, which contains practical job search and career change advice as well as career interviews with everyday Australians.
She also has some great tips on how to best utilise career and job seeking sites.

“Have a notebook handy to write down practical tips, resources and names of people that you can research afterwards and send a message to the host afterwards with your feedback or any questions that you would love answered in the future,” she says.

We asked Leah to share her top 10 career podcasts for 2020. Happy listening!
