Agriculture, Forestry and Fishing

These industries use natural resources (mainly land and water) to produce food, raw materials and goods for sale in Australia, and in overseas markets.

Sustainable management of our natural resources is important for future generations, and there are many exciting career pathways and jobs available in the new energy, agricultural technology (Agtech or Agritech) and sustainable economy sectors.

Traditional agricultural jobs involve activities such as the production of crops and farming of animals on land. Forestry jobs include activities such as growing, maintaining and harvesting forests (ie: timber). Fishing activities include breeding and farming fish, molluscs and crustaceans.

Agtech (software and hardware solutions) are increasingly used in farming jobs with the rise of 'smart' farming. AgTech mostly includes digital technologies which provide data, tools and knowledge to improve efficiency and profitability in primary industries and associated supply chains.

Employability skills required include problem solving, self-management and communication.

Many jobs are located in regional Australia, with some fisheries roles located on the coast. Some jobs require tertiary, TAFE qualifications, and others require on-the-job training. Seasonal work is common, providing good short-term opportunities for workers of all ages.
